How can the USA be land of the free when we still have capital punishment and life imprisonment?
Capital punishment is barbaric and unusual, criminals feel pain! Life imprisonment is inhumane and a serious violation of a person’s human rights.

In England capital punishment hasn’t been used since 1964 and murderers get at most 5 years and then are allowed to walk free under a new identity; that is much more civilized! Also in England it is illegal to shoot rapists, attackers or home intruders; if you do you get into more trouble than the criminal would for attacking you! Wonderful country and so much more civilized than the USA!

Because idiots refuse to repeal these things.

you forgot the death sentence.

People who are "suffering" because of capital punishment should think about the pain they inflicted on their victims. We could save money by doing it the China way and putting a bullet through their brains and billing their families for the cost.

Some people deserve to die for the things theyve done. Its justice.

Until then, maybe they can live at your house and I dunno, maybe babysit your kids. Sound good?

Yeah.. right. Do you feel the same about rabid and vicious animals? Why not go to a soccer match and try to tell me how civil your country is.

Isn’t the inability to defend yourself and your home indicative of a lack of freedom?
Alphonse | Feb 01, 2010

You can’t be that naive.

And if you are… pointing out the many flaws in your logic… won’t help. But for those who aren’t clueless…

The following two situations are MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE:
1) Immovable Object
2) Irresistible Force

Such is true for FREEDOM… You can only free to have FREEDOM - when your FREEDOM doesn’t step on another’s.
stanleys_2001 | Feb 01, 2010

You are misguided!! You want evil people released to commit crimes… you probably are pro-abortion also! Five years… I wonder if your family member was killed you would still say the same thing.

You forget there’s some basic rules you have to follow, like not killing or stealing or raping your neighbor’s child.
Nikki | Feb 01, 2010

Capital punishment - no

Life imprisonment - YES!

5 years for the like of Hindley+Brady, Peter Tobin..I think not!
Jenk | Feb 01, 2010

One forfeits his or her "right" to freedom when one commits crimes against society and its members.
By your logic if a crimminal who is violent and bent on hrm breaks into my home I should submit to his will and just be killed because he might have his rights violated by being tried convicted and incarcerated for his crimes against me????
Sorry he gets shot dead and I hope I don’t kill my own dog whom I like and is tearing his arm off while I pump rounds of 00buck into the scumbag.
Dr. Phil of sh*t | Feb 01, 2010

i hope that this is sarcasm, if not how would you feel if your house got broken in or if your wife was rapped or/and murdered? people can have compassion until some one does them wrong then they lash out. i say murders should be executed as soon as they are convicted and rapist should be castrated as soon as they are convicted.
sexy momma | Feb 01, 2010

This can’t be a serious question.

Because when you rape, kill or attack another person you give up your rights to freedom. YOUR freedom ends when you consciously attempt to deprive another person of theirs.
RitchWilliams | Feb 01, 2010

I will answer your question with a question. Is it fair and just for VICTIMS of heinous crimes such as you mention that have be deprived of life as they knew it by some other individual, knowing that said criminal will be allowed freedom and a "new" life after serving a short period of time? Is it JUSTICE if someone enters my home with violence, injures or kills my family and they get a slap on the back of their hands and told "Sin no more"? Where is my justice? The system isn’t perfect but it works eventually.

you’re a moron if you think you’re not allowed to defend yourself from someone breaking into your home.
Super Rant | Feb 01, 2010

Because being "free" carries a responsibility to the citizen. When you CHOOSE to break those rules…, especially in a violent crime… you lose your right to those freedoms. So, no, I have no problems with capital punishment and DEFINITELY no problem with life imprisonment.

What I DO have a problem with are Liberal do-gooders who are more concerned with the rights of the criminal than the rights of the victims.

I agree totally with the concept here…just not the venue. I think that in places like Cuba, Venezuela, China, Vietnam, and much of the Mid East should not punish killers at all. They should be rewarded and given instruction on how to rob, rape, commit excruciating torture and kill the politicians and their families. Failure to do this hurts the feelings of killers and and it is important to allow them to keep their self-esteem. I mean how unfair is it damage the psyche of someone just because they enjoy brutality. Failure to do this will only hurt the long-term happiness of all involved. Right?

Bottom line?: export liberalism.

I can stomach your opinion on capital punishment and accept the arguments of people who oppose on the grounds of religion, human rights, cruelty, and cost. Each one of those arguments are hard to defend the execution of another human being, cost twice as much to kill a criminal with appeals than it does to lock them away for life. How can we be a shining city on the hill if we still have this human rights flaw most nations have already abolished. No man should take what only God can give and thou shall not kill…all arguments that will shut up a pro death penalty argument really fast. I don’t agree fry em, but arguments are good.

As for life imprisonment not being an option your being dumb. Some people do things so bad and are so evil they can not be allowed into society again. Would you want Manson or Son of Sam living next door to you? How about child raper who murder his victims.

First of all capitol punishment is not inhumane. In some cases it is the epitome of Justice. It guarantees (like no other punishment can) 2 things not just one. It guarantees the offender pays for their crime. It guarantees the offender will never do it again. Show me a more effective approach, and I will reconsider my stand. Until then remember that freedom is not synonymous with anarchy.

So you’re telling me that you’re comfortable with serial killers not only NOT being executed, but being turned loose after a decade so they can kill again?

Very civilized of you. Good grief.
William K | Feb 01, 2010

Have you ever been around a violent offender? Have you ever been a victim of a crime? I don’t think so. In this Country, we have some really EVIL people that will never see the land of the free again. That I am thankful for. If we let all of the murders go tomorrow, almost all of them will commit another crime by the end of the week. I work in the prison system in the state i live in and inmates have told me that they would kill again, they would do anything to survive. If you live in the US, go to your local jail or prison and ask to volunteer. After one day of being around a man who has nothing to lose, who would take what you have. You would be singing a different tune.
